Kim & Kyle's Zen Garden Engagement Session

Updated: Aug 3

I've said it before, and I will say it again: I love rainy photo sessions.

More specifically, I love sessions right after it's rained. Everything is lush, almost technicolor, and something about the lighting and darker backgrounds makes everyone look lit from within.

I knew within seconds that I was going to have fun with Kim and Kyle. Our original plan had been to meet in South Park, but as we all know with Kansas weather and seasons, you can't always predict what you're going to get. South Park is lovely in all seasons, but there was a specific lack of blooms. Very green and lush? Yes. Much variation in interesting backgrounds for portraits? Not yet.

The Zen Garden, thankfully, is about a block away, and for such a small space it offers an amazing variety of beautiful features: pink peonies in bloom, rock gardens, pine trees, evergreen shrubs, a show-stopping Japanese maple with burgundy leaves. A quick text to Kim, and they were good to change it up. South Park engagement session, you have been replaced with a Zen Garden engagement session.

I like to ask my couples their comfort level with having their photo taken. By and large, everyone feels pretty awkward about it, and most are grateful for some direction on posing. Kim and Kyle told me they had never had professional photos done, but I would never have guessed if they hadn't told me. Despite it being cold, wet, and a little bit windy, they settled right in to goofing off with each other, losing themselves in kisses, and dissolving into laughter when Kyle inevitably made a funny face that Kim couldn't see until I pointed it out.

It was a short and extremely sweet session, and I cannot wait to photograph their wedding in August. If it's half as fun as today was, we're going to have a ball!
